For years, Lissy dreamed of providing a home for her two sons. Through Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties, Lissy achieved her dream of homeownership as the 2025 Women Build campaign homebuyer.
She now joins more than 1,900 other families and individuals who have partnered with Habitat to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through homeownership.
On August 22nd, we celebrated Lissy’s home dedication. She was surrounded by her son, family, friends, and Habitat supporters and volunteers.
Overcome with emotion, Lissy’s words were hard to find, but her gratitude was clear. “[Thank you] to all the people who gave their time, love and effort,” Lissy said. “I’m very happy, I’m very thankful.”
Lissy’s journey to this moment was not easy. She and her two teenage sons had moved frequently over the years, often reselling their belongings with each move because they lacked a permanent place to call home. Yet through every challenge, she remained committed to her family’s values and worked hard to build a better future.
As part of her partnership with Habitat, Lissy contributed 300 sweat-equity hours, attended more than 20 hours of homeownership and financial literacy classes, and paid $2,000 toward closing costs. Her son also contributed, volunteering his own time toward their home.
Earlier this year, we asked Lissy what she looked forward to most about owning a home. “It [will] give us the stability to believe in a better future, to be able to grow and to have an easier life,” she said at the time.
Now, that future is her present day. A week after her dedication, Lissy closed on her home, and she and her children can live freely in their new chapter of life.
