Building hope is an integral part of Habitat for Humanity's mission, and extends around the globe through tithes paid by the affiliates. A portion of tithes paid by Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties is allocated to Habitat's global fund which supports our sister affiliates in Haiti, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Colombia and Guatemala.
Designed to immerse and educate, Habitat for Humanity Global Village hosts travelers who want to change the world through eliminating poverty housing - one trip at a time. Local Habitat volunteers have the opportunity to follow our tithe to various countries to provide decent shelter to families experiencing extreme poverty.

The Project "Lets Build it Together for San Juan and Azua families"
At San Juan, Habitat Dominican Republic has been developing projects since 2002 due to an initiative of a local church and the community who were looking for solutions for an adequate housing.
The project site is about three hours from Santo Domingo. The Global Village team will drive to project site on Sunday after lunch, having a quick stop at La Sirena Bani, returning to Santo Domingo on Friday after noon. Volunteers can participate building a traditional Habitat house and/or a prefabricated house in accordance to the construction program. In both systems, construction activities varies during the day. More information about the construction locations and type of construction the team will participate on will be provided prior to arriving at the construction locations.
Some of the tasks volunteers support on site are: Hauling (often by hand) dirt, sand, gravel, water, cement blocks or slabs, bags of cement, etc. Clearing and leveling a site, Forming the rebar structure, including cutting, bending and tying the bars, Mixing cement or mortar, Laying cement blocks or bricks; assembling concrete slabs, filling and finishing masonry joints, installing doors and windows, finishing slab floors, daily site management and cleaning, including assisting with a physical, inventory of construction materials, painting and finishing touches.
Global Village Cost
The cost of the trip is $1,150 plus airfare*. Trip cost covers: accommodations, meals and snacks, in-country ground transportation, orientation materials, cultural activities & travel medical insurance.
*Because there are several fixed expenses that are allocated across the entire team, the actual trip cost will be finalized once the team roster is set.
Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties will coordinate ground transportation to and from the Miami airport. For budgeting purposes, expect approximately $50 per participant for the round-trip.
To/From The Dominican Republic
The team will be traveling on American Airlines leaving Miami at 10:30am traveling directly to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on flight AA987. Returning on American Airlines leaving the Dominican Republic at 1:42pm and arriving back in Miami at 4:14p on flight AA987. Participants are responsible for making their own flight reservations and all associated costs. As of April 21st, the above combination of flights cost $394.
Participants are welcome to arrive early or extend their stay in-country. However, Habitat ask that any alternative travel arrangements you may make do not impact the team’s travel schedule.
